The word entertainment has become a broad cultural concept. It can refer to anything affording pleasure, diversion or amusement: from the small private entertainments offered by a hotel to the elaborate entertainments of a royal ball. It may be a light-hearted experience, but it can also have serious or moral dimensions: a ceremony, religious festival, satire, etc. In modern times, the familiar forms of entertainment have been adapted and reworked across different media to meet diverse needs, from personal enjoyment to a largely commercial industry catering for global audiences.
