The Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 and published in New York City. It was the first successful tabloid in the United States and attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence; lurid photographs; and cartoons. It grew to be one of the largest newspapers in the world, with a circulation of over 2 million by 1930. The paper is the subject of the book Death of a Local Newspaper by Andrew Conte, which describes the decline of the News and its impact on McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
Circulation data through 2021 is taken from Editor & Publisher and other sources, and is adjusted to account for year-over-year changes in audience composition, readership patterns, and the number of newspaper outlets. Estimated total circulation is based on a combination of print and digital subscriptions. In 2022, estimated weekday and Sunday print circulation was down 8% and 16% respectively compared to the previous year. Estimated advertising revenue for the same period was down 5% compared to 2021.
